Similar to the above example when a pool owner asks about what size pool heater they should get most installers just pick their favorite heater that is between 200 000 btu and 350 000 btu knowing from experience that this will work on a pool approximately the size of the one in question.
And this is because the amount of water a heat pump needs to heat the size of your pool directly correlates to how powerful it needs to be.
Even the most efficient heat pumps will end up costing you 400 or 500 dollars a month if you use them frequently because unlike gas heaters they can take days to heat up your pool by 10 or 15 degrees.
Typically a 50 000 btu heat pump is used for pools up to 13 000 gallons roughly up to a 21ft round pool and the larger size heat pumps of 70 000 to 80 000 btu s are used for the larger aboveground pools up to a 30ft or up to an 18 x33 oval pool.

So by that logic the bigger your pool volume the stronger bigger your heat pump should be.
An undersized pool heater will heat too slowly and a severely oversized pool heater may end up unnecessarily driving up the cost of this big investment.
