Acetone is a chemical that is too harsh for some surfaces. A marble poultice is first applied to the surface of the marble above the stain the liquid part of the poultice will be partially absorbed by the marble and will slowly draw out the stains from the marble pours into the white paste material. Pure acetone is recommended for removing oil stains from granite as well as for cleaning marble. Place between 1 4 cup and 1 2 cup of flour in a shallow bowl.

Make an acetone poultice with talcum powder baking soda or any other absorbent powder such as cornstarch or flour. Some stains may require a poultice of acetone and a powdered material such as talc powdered chalk or white molding plaster which can be applied to the stain and left for up to two days to draw out the stain. This is a lengthy and slow process so the poultice needs to sit on top of the stain for at least 48 hours. Granite is capable of handling acetone s strength so acetone can be used to clean granite floors and countertops.
